IMO the most important thing to realize is we are being had by TPTB.
In C.S. Lewis' novel That Hideous Strength Fairy Hardcastle (head of the secret police in an organization plotting to take over the world) informs Mark (a dupe who slowly and grudgingly comprehends the reality of being duped) about "polarization":
"Isn't it absolutely essential to keep a fierce Left and fierce Right, both on their toes and each terrified of the other? That's how we get things done."
The novel was published in 1945 so attentive readers have long been aware of the evil dynamic used to divide and conquer public opinion.
If collectively we are able to grasp the enormity of how we are STILL being duped, some legitimate hope stirs someplace which may be enough to turn the tide.
It's not too late.
Here's another fascinating statement (also to Mark) by the Fairy:
"Why you fool, it's the educated reader who can be gulled. All our difficulty comes with the others. When did you meet a workman who believes the papers? He takes it for granted that they're all propaganda and skips the leading articles....He's our problem. We have to recondition him.
But the educated public, the people who read the high-brow weeklies, don't need reconditioning. They're all right already. They'll believe anything."
In my experience this is an accurate assessment and those who uncritically trust 'the consensus science' should beware.
